Peekskill resident Wilmer Cango was fatally struck by Train No. 830 on Monday, Feb. 6 around 7:10 a.m. at the Peekskill Metro-North station at the Hudson Avenue Crossing, Metro-North officials said.
Now, his family is dealing with the unexpected loss of a son. However, they will not have to do it alone, as a GoFundMe page was started by community members to help the family with the funeral expenses.
On the fundraiser page, Cango is described as a hard worker.
"Wilmer was a wonderful kid helping his mom in any way, he was hard-working at CVS and a very good student," wrote the fundraiser's organizer, Jessica Pacheco.
The GoFundMe is meant to "give some relief" to Cango's mother, father, and brothers. So far, more than $8,000 had been raised for the family out of a $10,000 goal as of Thursday, Feb. 9.
More details about how Cango was hit by the train and why he was on the tracks have not yet been released.
A visitation service for Cango will be held Thursday, Feb. 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home located in Peekskill at 414 Washington St.
A funeral for Cango will then be held on Friday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption in Peekskill at 920 1st St.
